The company's Board of Directors has also voted in favor of removing Mr. Bello from his role as Chairman. The decision came about, in part, as a result of the company's strategic plans for fiscal 2008 to focus on refining its franchise operations. Mr. Bello, whose background lies primarily in the retail soft drink industry, will remain on as a board member. CP Rail to buy DM&E for at least $1.48 billion
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd said it planned to buy the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corp for at least $1.48 billion to expand its network and increase its access to U.S. Midwest markets. Canada's No. 2 railway will expand by about 2,500 miles of track in acquiring DM&E, the largest U.S. regional railroad, CP Rail said late on Tuesday. Calgary, Alberta-based CP Rail, which expects the deal to close in the next 30 to 60 days, said the deal for the private company consisted of a $1.48 billion cash payment upon closing and future contingent payments of up to about $1 billion. "The DM&E is a high-quality, growing regional railroad that complements our existing franchise," CP Rail Chief Executive Fred Green said in a statement. "This investment presents the opportunity for future growth through further expansion of our network and is accretive to our EPS in 2008." The deal for Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based DM&E comes after CP Rail said in July it had rejected an "inquiry" by Brookfield Asset Management and denied it was in takeover talks.
McDonald’s launches ‘Smile’ campaign
MCDONALD�S Qatar is launching a humanitarian campaign under the name �A smile is just a thought away�, as part of its celebration of World Children�s Day (WCD) for the sixth year in a row, according to an official of the franchise. The campaign is aimed at generating funds from the sale of WCD drawing-sets at McDonald�s restaurants for the benefit of the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs. A party was held at Shafallah yesterday to kick-start this year�s campaign which will run for around two months. Commenting on the launch of the campaign, McDonald�s Qatar, managing director, Kamal al-Mana said: �WCD is an annual humanitarian occasion of great importance to us, due to the benefit it has for our children in the country. Celebrating this occasion every year is yet another milestone in our commitment towards our local community and a continuation to the support we extend to children�s causes.
